A software-based switch is the Cisco Nexus 1000V Series (N1KV). It uses the NX-OS software and runs on the VMware ESX hypervisor. The Virtual Ethernet Module (VEM) and the Virtual Supervisor Module are the two parts of the Nexus 1000v architecture (VSM). The VSM provides the administration plane and the VEM provides the data plane, making up the Cisco Nexus 1000V Series Switch as a whole.
